A few months ago I deleted an image from my web site but still I am getting hundreds of hits from [link] looking for this image.
Is there any way I can tell Yahoo spiders that this does not exist anymore? It just seems annoying. Does this mean that every time I delete something it's going to take 6 months before the spiders stop looking for it?

That's unlikely.
What do you see when you click "host webpage http: //www. ... .html with the image in its original context."
Check that your site does not still link to the missing image; xenu is your friend.
Also, try a Google image search and see if that shows anything that Yahoo doesn't.

Yahoo is notorious in this matter. It keeps looking for non-existent URLs for a long time. As Quadrille said, look for any reference to the image from your own site and remove them. Even then Yahoo will keep asking for this for quite some time. As long as you don't use a custom error message serving a large page, it is of no consequence.

Getting "404 Not Found" errors for pages that no longer exist is quite normal.
It is also normal for bots to periodically check to see if the page has come back.
Using "410 Gone" is a stronger signal that the URL will not be re-used in the future.
