I've been having a serious dilemma trying to figure out how to spend my advertising budget. Like most people I haven't got a large budget so I am trying to figure out where to spend it to get the biggest impact. I found this company that will submit my website to 8,000 directories for $250, I tried it with 1,450 Directories on another website, but I am not getting a lot of traffic. Should I just spend the $299 to get this new website into the Yahoo Directory. What's your experience?

There's zero point in adding your site to 45,000 cr*p directories, unless you want spam for life.
If any of them demanded reciprocal links, remove them instantly.
There is pint in submitting to a *handful* of Quality Directories, however; there's some SEO value, and you may get direct referrals (especially from local or niche directories).
Most directory submission services are what we call 'scams'
If you have a good site that meets Yahoo!'s guidelines, then many would say it's a good investment.

submitting to tha many directories as Quadrille says is almost all a waste and you can do it manually its crazy to pay so much for a company to do it, and depends what your goal is you want more links? help ranking? or just focused on traffic?and if you wanan choose directories the only worthy ones are yahoo and business.com which still are not worth paying for in my opinion.

Listing in Yahoo directory - it appears - improves your chances of ranking higher in Yahoo search.

Do you really have to pay to rank your website? You can do it yourself. Only that it takes a lot of time to build links!

I've recently worked with a site that covers a small local area. The site was submitted to three topic-related directories, five related national organisations, and three local-area directories. This was enough to get the site reasonable placement in Google (especially local searches) and Yahoo SERPs, and some traffic. That exposure then led to the number of natural links doubling in the next month or so. Over the next month or two, there are a dozen or so sites that we will alert to the new site being online, some of whom may link.
